Many know about Mesopotamia’s Annual Ox Roast, hosted by the town’s fire department. However, many do not know where it originated. Years ago, the town Trustees were trying to find a way to raise funds to install restrooms in the town hall. The Reverend & Mrs. Willie Everage, key members of our community, attended each trustee meeting and immediately, Mrs. Everage knew the answer to their ongoing question. Each Labor Day, the Everage family would visit Niagara Falls and pass through Rock Creek. While on their way back home, they would stop into Rock Creek and visit their Annual Ox Roast. She told the town trustees about this idea and then, Mesopotamia's Annual Ox Roast was born. However, the only person that remembered it was her idea was another key member of the community, Eli Miller, owner of Eli Miller’s Leather Shop.
Mrs. Everage gives special thanks to Eli for remembering her idea and giving her credit where credit was due. Before the Mesopotamia Ox Roast went into effect, the Everages’ church made and served ox sandwiches to the community, and it was a great hit!
Back in the day, the Ox Roast featured lots of interesting commodities like rows of antiques for sale, great food, handmade items, a car show, and even donkey ball!
